About DrivingItaly.com
The story behind the birth of DrivingItaly.com

Hi, I'm Claudio Raiola. My journey with DrivingItaly.com didn't start in a boardroom—it started in the driver's seat of a car I technically wasn't allowed to drive anymore.

In early 2024, I relocated from Australia to Italy. Like many expats, I soon hit a major regulatory bottleneck: my Australian license and International Driving Permit were only valid for 12 months from the date of my residency. To stay in Italy and drive beyond the first 12 months of registering as a resident, its necessary to learn the all the Italian road rules and and take driving lesson, just as you did when you were 18.

The Problem

Italian driving exams are not offered in English. This created a double-hurdle: I didn't just have to learn the rules of the road; I had to learn a highly specific, "bureaucratic" version of the Italian language used in the Theory Exam exam, notorious for its complex phrasing and linguistic traps designed to trip up even some native speakers.

My "Is There a Better Way?" Moment

As a platform developer, I see the world through the lens of efficiency, process improvement and soution ideation, versus the more commonly used lens of "things are what they are, 'just live with it'". I spent weeks scouring study guides, exam platforms, and relevant social media groups, only to find tools and resources already available indeed did the job, however the are far from being desinged in the most efficient, userfriendly and student learning focused way, marking the journey an ecen greater challenge, for someone having to learn the language and the Italian road laws simultaneously.

Instead of struggling with learning tools that didn't work as efficiently, as I had expected, I decided to sole the dilema, by engineer a solution that did. I used my technical background to build a comprehensive, data-driven learning ecosystem. DrivingItaly.com is the result of my "Customer, 'User-First' ", obsession.

Built by a Student, for Students

Because I am living this process in real-time, I've built features that only someone "in the trenches" would think of:

  • Linguistic Complexity Ratings: DrivingItaly.com does not just give you the questions; we rate the difficulty of the grammar and terminology used in the Italian phrasing.
  • Targeted Practice: Customize your quizzes to focus specifically on the areas where the language, not just the law, is causing you to stumble.
  • Performance Analytics: I've replaced the "guessing game" with a high level student performance analytics dashboard. Through interactive, drill down pie charts, you can see exactly which categories need attention, allowing you to study smarter.

"I didn't build this site just to have a 'good idea.'
I built it to provide students having to meet the challenge of learning the Italian Driving Licence theory, a more streamlined, efficient, and modern way to and then to their goal of being to have their Italian driving license.
My goal is to provide the 'better way', which I had hoped already existed, sadly it did not, however the good news is, IT DOES NOW, with DrivingItaly.com."
